Telecommunications Network - SMNP - Simple Network Management Protocol

Originally devised by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 1987.

It standardises the way management applications (such as HP OpenView) communicate with managed devices (such as routers)

To support the SNMP protocol the device must hold a Management Information Base (MIB)

There is an equivilant standard for managing desktop PCs this is known as DMI.
