Telecommunications History - IBM Protocols

We thought that X.25 was the thing of the future and that old proprietary protocols like IBM bi-sync and SNA would disappear. However customers wanted a way to send IBM protocols over the top of X.25. Eventually there was a dangerous new idea in BT that we should actually give customers what they wanted (an approach that led to all sorts of problems). Telenet convinced our managers that they had a reliable way to do this using the TP3006 so we were sent over to Telenet to be instructed in how it worked.

Bhupa knew the system so we exchanged our BA business class return flight for and internal flight to New York, a helicopter ride across New York and a Pan Am business class return home.

This gave us just over a day for some sight seeing. We stayed with Bhupas sister.

I seem to remember Jim Hamrick showed us round Washington after work.
